Beneficiary: All Saints Parish in Warsaw

Updates March 13, 2026

ks. Piotr Waleńdzik

Description

All Saints Church – a place where history and hope meet

In the heart of Warsaw, at Grzybowski Square, stands a church that for centuries has been a silent witness to the history of two nations – the Polish and the Jewish. All Saints Church is a unique place, marked by tragedy, but also by heroism, solidarity, and courage. The history of this church is a fascinating story about people, place, and time – and it is this story that we would like to present here.

Grzybów – a meeting place of cultures

As early as the 16th century, this area was home to a municipal jurisdiction independent from Old Warsaw, full of life and diversity. For centuries, different cultures, languages, and religions coexisted here, and the distinctive atmosphere of Grzybowski Square reflected this unique mosaic. It was here that one of Warsaw’s most beautiful churches was built – a masterpiece by the renowned architect Henryk Marconi.

A church of freedom, solidarity, and resistance

All Saints Church, the largest church in Warsaw, repeatedly found itself at the center of historic events. In 1905, it became a venue for patriotic demonstrations. Within the parish, Fr. Marceli Godlewski – a distinguished figure of the clergy – established the first social organizations in Congress Poland, putting into practice the ideas of the papal encyclical Rerum Novarum.

During the German occupation, the church became a place of shelter and aid for Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto. The work of Fr. Godlewski and the parish community became one of the finest chapters in the shared history of Poles and Jews. Although the church was heavily damaged during the Warsaw Uprising, the spirit of the place endured.

After the war – reconstruction and a new role

After World War II, thanks to the efforts of many people – including those whose lives had been saved – the church was rebuilt. Today, All Saints Church is not only a place of prayer. It is also a space open to culture, encounters, remembrance, and dialogue – deeply rooted in tradition, yet always open to the modern world.
